Dissapointed in Kentucky

I should have known. I should have known that a Steve Spurrier led South Carolina would defeat Kentucky. I should have known that other than Andre Woodson, Kentucky has a bunch of no-namers. I should have known that the aforementioned Woodson couldn't do it alone.

But I didn't.

I thought Kentucky was for real this year. After defeating Louisville, I thought they had a real chance to push being undefeated towards the end of the season. I thought that Andre Woodson would continue another no-interception streak.

But I was wrong.

I will say though that both Chris Smelley and Eric Norwood look good for the Gamecocks. I will also say that I thought the Cocks' defense made the Kentucky offensive line look like High School chumps. South Carolina has one blemish in their record, and that's their loss to LSU. I should have learned the leason to look beyond the record. But I drank the Kool-Aid that sports anchors around the world have given me, and quite frankly, I'm feeling a little cocky right about now. Not cocky about the Wildcats, but overly confident that South Carolina, if they play like they did last night, could beat many ranked teams in the nation.

-On another note, how about my Indians!!!!! They looked absolutely amazing, making Chien Ming Wang look like "Chump" Ming Wang. Hafner, Cabrera, Martinez, and Garko all had homeruns, and the 40 year old Kenny Lofton looked like he was drinking from the Fountain of Youth, driving in 4 RBIs vs. the Yankees. Hopefully we'll see more of the same tonight.

Well that's it for now, I'm out like Travis Henry's season. Good night, and go Tribe!

Why Adrian Peterson (and Marshawn Lynch) will be better than Reggie Bush.

The Golden Boy. The President. The "Bush Push." All of these are common associations when the name Reggie Bush comes up. Back in 2006, when the Texans had the first pick, they declined to selected Reggie Bush. Instead, they went for Mario Williams, but that's another blog in itself. Reggie Bush, Mr. USC, would be going to the New Orleans Saints, whose city had been destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Makes for a good story, doesn't it? However, there's more than what meets the eye concerning Bush. Can he be a great runningback? Can he be a full-time runningback? Can he be a franchise player? I ask myself these questions, and I believe the answer is no.

Before you get on my back about Reggie, let me explain. Reggie Bush is not the next Curtis Enis. He is not the next Ki-Jana Carter. And no, he's not the next Ricky Williams. He's not the next anything. His name is Reggie Bush, and he is a unique player, just like everyone else. Now that we have that out of the way, let's bring Adrian Peterson in to the mix.

Many people use college stats to determine whether a player will do good in the NFL or not. Let me tell you right now, college stats are garbage. Don't get me wrong, college football is a great way to determine the pros and cons of a player, just not their stats. Their technique, their fundamentals, and how they play the game is most important. The thing I don't like about Reggie Bush is that he got by in college with his athleticism and speed, not his fundamentals. In the pros, he's been shut down by opposing defenders that are nearly as fast as he is.

Don't believe me? Let's take a look at stats. NFL stats, that is. So far, in his 2nd NFL season, Reggie Bush has rushed for 80 yards on 29 carries after 3 games. That's a measly 2.8 yards per carry, and it's especially pitful on a team like the Saints (yes, their 0-3, they'll rebound soon enough). Adrian Peterson has 383 yards on 76 carries after 4 games, which is an average of 5.0 yards per run. Adrian Peterson is currently 5th in the league in rushing. Fifth! He's using his brute power and his north-south running ability to run, unlike Reggie Bush's east-west style. If you'll notice, Minnesota is just 1-3, yet Peterson is rushing for more yardage than what Bush is. Yes, they have Bryant McKinnie and Steve Hutchinson, but Peterson is the real deal with or without that line.

Now, it's Marshawn Lynch's turn to line up against Bush. Lynch has 307 yards on 80 carries after 4 games, and that's even with facing the vaunted Pittsburgh rush defense. He's averaging 3.8 yards per rush, which is a little low, but this even with the porous swiss cheese that is Buffalo's offensive line. Lynch rushes similarly to Peterson, using his power to run over defenders when needed.

Thus, although Reggie Bush is more marketable than both Peterson and Lynch, I would take either over Bush. Peterson and Lynch have flashed a tremendous amount of potential in the league so far, and look to be a dynamic duo from the supposedly weak 2007 draft class. Meanwhile, Reggie Bush, in his second year, is facing criticism that he isn't as good as advertised. Well, he may not be as good as advertised, but he sure can advertise well.

That's it folks, I'm out like the Yankees will be against my Cleveland Indians.

Post Weekend Analysis.

This is one of the few times you'll ever hear me say I wish I was wrong.

I knew the Texans would struggle against the Falcons without a few of their starters. I just didn't know it be this bad. 26-16 to the Falcons?!? The lowly Falcons, the Falcons that have been run over by a car, barely breathing life (by the way, that "car" is Joey Harrington). Only thing is, this time that car swerved and missed the Falcons, instead hitting a big 'ol bull in the middle of the road. Yes, that's right. Joey Harrington picked apart the Texans defense. Now let's move this aside and pretend I never had to utter those sickening words.

I was wrong on one thing though, and that was the NCAA rankings. The polls surprised me in a good way. I was glad to see teams like South Florida and Kentucky rewarded. Speaking of Kentucky, my pick for Heisman right now is Andre Woodson. Sure, he threw an interception (finally!) in this weekends win, but the guy has been looking mighty impressive.

Trent Edwards, Marshawn Lynch, Adrian Peterson, and Amobi Okoye all played great games this week. That's right, I called it in my Rookie Watch! But Brandon Jackson? I think I'll keep my hand down for calling that one. Yikes.

My prediction for tonight is New England over Cincinnati. New England has looked unstoppable, with the Brady/Moss Express looking unstoppable. Cincinnati's defense has looked absolutely hideous, just like Britney Spears at every award show! (Ouch, sorry Britney. I hope K-Fed can take care of your kids.) They gave up 51 points to the Browns just two weeks ago. New England>Cleveland, although Cleveland did look impressive against Baltimore. I'm looking for Moss to catch 1 TD pass and Brady to throw 1 additional TD in a 27-18 victory.

A note for all fantasy players: The Cadillac has shut down. That's right, Carnell Williams is out for the year with a torn ACL. Don't pick up Michael Pittman...he's not worth the trouble.

To end, I'd like to name my college and pro football players of the week.
College:
Gold Medal-Andre Woodson QB KENTUCKY
Silver Medal-DeSean Jackson WR CALIFORNIA
Bronze Medal-Darren McFadden RB ARKANSAS
Worst of the Week-Pat White QB WEST VIRGINIA

NFL:
Gold Medal-Tony Romo QB Dallas
Silver Medal-Osi Umenyiora DE New York Giants (6 SACKS!)
Bronze Medal-Breat Favre QB Green Bay
The "Rex Grossman" Award-Brian Griese QB Chicago (How ironic.)

Good night everyone, I'm out like Norv Turner!

What a Wild Weekend it's been thus far!

Yesterday we witnessed a momentous occasion...a few of them, actually. Oklahoma, Florida, Texans, Rutgers, Penn State, and Alabama all lost, and that doesn't even inlcude West Virginia's loss on Thursday. College football is really proving the "any given day" saying. My top Ten now looks like this:
1. USC
2. LSU
3. California
4. Ohio State
5. West Virginia
6. Florida
7. Boston College
8. Oklahoma
9. Wisconsin
10. Clemson

On another note, the Houston Texans face a challenge today, facing the Atlanta Falcons. Don't laugh, I'm not finished. Their two top WR's, Andre Johnson and Jacoby Jones, are both out today. Ahman Green is also questionable. However, look for Matt Schaub to rise up against his former team. I'm looking for a 31-21 win for Houston.

It's time for this week's Rookie Watch! These five rookies are ones that I feel will step it up this week:
Marshawn Lynch (vs. NYJ)
Amobi Okoye (vs. ATL)
Brandon Jackson (vs. MIN)
Adrian Peterson (vs. GB)
Trent Edwards (vs. NYJ)

Here are my NFL Picks for this week:
Green Bay over Minnesota
Miami over Oakland
Buffalo over New York Jets
Houston over Atlanta
Chicago over Detroit
Baltimore over Cleveland
Dallas over St. Louis
Carolina over Tampa Bay
San Francisco over Seattle
San Diego over Kansas City
Pittsburgh over Arizona
Indy over Denver
Philadelphia over NYG
New England over Cincy

Well, that's all folks, I'm out like Jessica Alba in an ugly contest! See you later!
